i learned from a friend today that there are other istari that tolkien actually wrote about. by other, i mean other than saruman, gandalf, and radagast. he says they all went to the west, and that one of them was "(name) the blue".
i can't find my guide to middle-earth anywhere, as i live in a state of constant mess. does anyone know of these other istari? thanks.

yes tolkien did write about five istari. radagast the brown saruman, gandalf, and the two blue wizards. each one was chosen by one of the valnor to be sent to middle earth. they are equall in power to sauron before he made the rings and the balraugs (sorry about the spelling)technically galdalf could have destroyed sauron whith ease but the istari were strictly forbiden to not fight sauron, but to help the others ie the fellowship destroy him. no one knows what happened to the two blue wizards except that they went into the east or west with saruman and when he came back they weren't with him anymore. a good book to read about them is called The Unfinished Tales of Numenor and the wizards. written by christopher tolkien useing his dads information. Hope I helped.
